Fencing

There are a total of 12 events, including individual and team competitions in the three weapons (Foil, Epee and Sabre) for both men's and women's categories.

Rules & scoring:

Points are received by making a touch in the opponent’s target area. In Epee, if both fencers land a touch at the same time, both are rewarded a point. But in Foil and Sabre, only one fencer can score a touch. When both fencers land an attack simultaneously, the referee will decide which fencer had the right of way.

The valid target areas for three weapons:

- Foil: Within the torso of the body (from shoulders to the groin, front and back)

- Epee: The entire body, including head and feet

- Sabre: From the bend of the hips (both front and back) to the top of the head (includes both arms and the mask)

Individual events:

Fencers will put into groups for poules stage, fencer score 5 points or the one with the most points within 3 minutes win.

The fencers advance to direct elimination are fenced in three bouts of 3 minutes each. The first fencer to score 15 points or with the most touches at the end of the third bout wins.

As Sabre is much faster than the other two weapons, when one fencer reaches 8 points, there is a 1 minute break.

If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, there will be a 1-minute sudden-death tiebreak. The first fencer to score a touch wins. Before the fencing recommences, the referee draws lots to decide the Priority. If neither fencer scores a touch within the 1 minute period, the fencer who has “Priority” wins.

Team events:

All team events will be run by direct elimination format. Each team composed of 3 fencers and 1 substitute. The matches consist of 9 bouts, with each bout last for 3 minutes and limited to 5 points. Each fencer will fence the 3 fencers from the opposing team once, and the first team to reach 45 points or the team leading when the match end wins the match.
